Brenda Holzke

Brenda Holzke has been a commercial ceramicist for nineteen years.  Self-taught, her designs have been sold in retail stores such as Barney's, Neiman Marcus, Pottery Barn and many more.  She has produced private label designs for Starbucks, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Pier One and others.

Holzke's true passion lies in creating one of a kind hand-built vessels.  Now, she has created "Indigenous Baskets," and exploration of shape and form derived from baskets of tribes and cultures around the world reinterpreted in a fresh and urban way.  Each basket has become a canvas for the artist, allowing her to paint her abstract painting style both around and inside the entire piece.  As a result Brenda Holzke has created fine art that is both ancient and contemporary, equally at home on a modern table and an ancient tribal hearth.

"Private Beach" by Brenda Holzke

Here, Brenda Holzke interprets a constant theme from her childhood growing up in Los Angeles.  The coast of Los Angeles is littered with homes of the wealthy whose property claim reaches to the ocean.  These beaches, seen from afar, are idyllic stretches of marine blues and cloud whites.  But the edges of this seemingly peaceful world are surrounded by the shape edges of chain link fences and barbed wire.

In her series, "Indigenous Baskets," Brenda Holzke explores the shape and form of baskets from tribes and cultures around the world interpreted for an urban world.

Holzke uses a mixture of slips, engobes, underglaze color, chalk and pencil to achieve her multi-layered srufaces.
